In Spring 2011, Chris Hall, the Market Manager, teamed up with Connie McCullough, former owner of Sweet Tomato Farms, and Becky Stevens, head of the Hilltop Elementary School PTA, to create a “Food Explorer” program, introducing first and second grade students to fruits and vegetables, which part of the plant we eat, and how the plant grows.

As an outgrowth of this program, a well-known Berkeley realtor, Barbara Henderson of Red Oak Realty, chipped in to sponsor a program called Kensington Framers’ Market Grows Readers, to raise money for the libraries at Hilltop and Thousand Oaks Elementary Schools. Each child at these schools received a coupon worth $5 towards book purchase at their school. The children can drop off the coupons at the Sunday Market at Colusa Circle any time between now and September 4. The coupons designate which school the money goes to, and at the end of the summer we will give a check to each school for the value of all their coupons we have collected. Our goal is $500 per school.
